The most famous village of destination, along with Biertan or Saschiz [I68], Viscri annually attracts tens of thousands of tourists eager to see "the village of Prince Charles of Great Britain". Hidden between the hills, but close to the European road that connects Brasov to Sighișoara, the village houses one of the most spectacular Saxon fortified churches, registered since 1999 in the UNESCO World Heritage. The architecture of Viscri is typical of the Saxon villages, where the cheerful colors and ornaments from which stories tell about their current or past owners are dominated. A trapezoidal choir was built on the foundations of the Romanesque church erected by the first Szekler colonists, and around 1500 the church was fortified. Then the church hall was extended and connected with the hitherto independent dungeon, which probably belonged to a family of graves. The dungeon was raised to a level with bells rooms and a guardrail on the consoles. A sixth level provided with firing holes is made in the roof. The fortified level of the choir was demolished in 1743. The enclosure wall, 7m high, was built at the beginning of the 16th century, and in the 15th century. The seventeenth century was provided with fortified houses, defensive towers and guard roads, which are still preserved today. In the peaceful times after 1743 the patrol road was demolished, in its place cereal chambers for the villagers were built. The interior of the church still retains the vaulted ceiling of 1743 and the austere furnishings. Access is free.   Discover in Viscri The Fortified Church built in the Gothic style, between the 12th and 13th centuries, on the site of a former Roman church. It is surrounded by defense walls, two towers, two bastions. The construction is documented under the name of Alba Eclesia (White Church, in German translation Weisskirch) and bears the dedication of St. Andrew. The ensemble of the fortified church in Viscri is particularly due to the high degree of conservation and the rural architecture typical of the region. The restoration has been done since 2000, by the Mihai Eminescu Trust Foundation (MET), which started to develop ideas and concepts for preserving the traditional image of the village, also involving the local community. It is already well-known that ASR Prince Charles of Wales himself returns here at least once a year and prefers to wander the picturesque surroundings.
